Group D is the host USA's group. They play three games on the West Coast of the United States, all in front of massive home crowds. Here is a complete preview of Group D.
THE TEAMS
USA
FIFA Ranking: Around 11 to 14
Host nation and automatic qualifier. The USA have a young, talented squad that has been building toward this moment for years. Christian Pulisic leads the attack and is one of the more recognizable American players in European leagues. Tyler Adams is the midfield engine when fit. The USA have never won a FIFA World Cup 2026 Group D. This tournament on home soil is their most realistic shot in decades.
Paraguay
FIFA Ranking: Around 50 to 60
Paraguay qualified through CONMEBOL, which is one of the toughest qualifying routes in world football. CONMEBOL qualifying features Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia. Any team that comes out of that process is battle-hardened. Paraguay are physical, well-organized and capable of an upset.
Australia
FIFA Ranking: Around 22 to 26
Australia reached the quarterfinals at the 2022 World Cup under manager Graham Arnold. That result transformed perceptions of Australian football globally. Mathew Leckie scored the goal that knocked Denmark out. Goalkeeper Mat Ryan was exceptional. Australia enter 2026 with confidence and experience from that deep run.
UEFA Playoff C Winner
One of: Türkiye, Romania, Slovakia or Kosovo
Türkiye are the highest ranked of the four. They reached the semifinals of Euro 2020 and are a technically strong side. Romania have historical World Cup pedigree. Slovakia and Kosovo round out the playoff picture. Whoever qualifies fills the final Group D spot.

THE KEY STORYLINE
The USA plays two of their three group games at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. The opener against Paraguay on June 12 at 9:00 PM ET will be one of the most-watched soccer games in US history. A home crowd of 70,000 fans and a prime-time broadcast on FOX creates the biggest stage American soccer has ever seen in the regular season.
The second game in Seattle against Australia on June 19 is the real test of the group. Australia's physical pressing style will challenge the USA's young squad. A win here effectively clinches advancement.
WHO ADVANCES
The USA are favorites to top the group. Australia are the strongest opposition. Paraguay and the UEFA PO-C winner will battle for the third and fourth spots.
If the USA finishes second or even third, they could still advance as one of the eight best third-place teams. But topping the group gives them a more favorable bracket position in the Round of 32.
THE HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE
Playing three group games at home stadiums in the USA's two most soccer-dense regions (Los Angeles and Seattle) gives the USMNT a genuine structural advantage. The noise, the crowd support and the familiarity of the settings all matter. No visiting team has experienced anything like a packed SoFi Stadium cheering against them.
